Daria Costume: DIY Guide

Daria, the titular main character of the 1990’s MTV animated show of the same name, isn’t exactly all smiles and sunshine. A high school student with a general dislike of people and a cynical attitude to boot, she’s neither particularly popular or outgoing, but she’s smart, witty and great at observing the world around her. Residing in the fictional suburban town of Lawndale, she’s a typical angst-ridden American teenager.

She may not be the life of the party on TV, but you can still be the life of your own party or convention with Daria’s stylish fashion choices and a costume that’s sure to be nonconformist!

Daria Costume Breakdown

Hair:

Daria has thick brunette hair down past her shoulders, drooping around her face. If you already have long brown hair, tease it with brushes and combs to get the same thick look, and add hairspray to help. Otherwise, you can either dye your hair or wear a long dark brown wig. Check online costume websites and party stores for a good one, and make sure to purchase a rubber wig cap as well so the wig won’t accidentally fall off.

Outfit:

Daria wears a faded orange t-shirt, sleek dark green jacket with an upturned collar and a pleated black skirt just above her knees. You can buy these items online from larger clothing retailers or from costume stores. If you can’t find a faded orange t-shirt, check your local thrift store for a good one to add authenticity to your costume. When buying a jacket, to get the look of the collar, just unfold it and have it stick up rather than down. You can also make a Daria outfit yourself out of fabric by sewing.

Complexion:

Daria has a very pallid complexion. You can use pale cream foundation or white pressed makeup powder to get this same effect. Shop online or visit the cosmetics counter at a local drugstore to find whatever works for you.

Accessories:

She just wouldn’t be Daria without those buckled black Goth boots and thick, large glasses!

If you already wear prescription eyeglasses you can just keep using them for your costume. If not, you can buy a pair of sunglasses or fake party glasses from a costume website or store. Daria’s glasses are big, circular-framed and black, so they’re very basic, which should make it fairly easy to locate a good pair. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with mixing things up a bit and making your costume unique with a different style of glasses. Look online to find a pair you like.

For her boots, check online costume shops. Many costume shops carry the same heavy black style of footwear complete with silver buckles. Don’t forget to order the right size for yourself! If you’d rather shop locally, check shoe stores for clunky black military-type boots and try to find a pair with buckles. If you can’t find those, you can glue silver buckles and accents to an old pair of boots at home.

There’s a lot of room to be creative with this costume and really stand out at cosplay events and parties.

My goal is to not wake up at 40 with the bitter realization that I’ve wasted my life on a job I hate because I was forced to decide on a career in my teens.
