Willy Wonka Costume Guide

Men's Deluxe Willy Wonka Costume

138-CosplayFaeturedImage

Willy Wonka, played by Gene Wilder, is an eccentric recluse. Not much is known about him at the beginning of the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory except that he took over his family’s chocolate factory, and he makes the best candies in the whole world.

There are lots of bizarre stories about him that are all so silly and backwards and fabulous that they can’t possibly be true. Or can they? Wonka has sent out golden tickets in his candy bars which invite a few children to his magical candy factory. When they enter, they find a world where almost everything you’ll see is eatable, edible. I mean, you can eat almost everything. Small Oompa- Loompas tend the gumdrop gardens and the chocolate river.

I should probably start the article. The suspense is terrible… I hope it’ll last. But, so much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it. Thank you.

Wonka’s Style

Wonka, being an eccentric, wears strange clothing. His look is very 18th century, but bright and colorful. His long, curly blonde hair is topped with a hat top? a head topper? a top hat. He is shaven, and he wears a white collared button- down shirt, a black vest covered in bright purple flowers, and a golden 70’s style / 1800’s style oversized bow-tie.

Willy Wonka wears a velvet purple blazer jacket, and khaki chinos. He also loves his red leather dress shoes and his wooden walking stick with a white goose handle. He looks like he could be the owner of a funhouse, but it’s only a funhouse if you’re having fun.

Items You’ll Need to Complete the Costume:

  • Long curly blonde hair
  • Top hat and gold oversized bow tie
  • Velvet purple jacket
  • Purple flower vest, white collared shirt, and khaki chino pants

How to Dress Like Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Hair:

Wonka wears his hair long and curly. He has blonde hair. I’m sorry, but all questions MUST be submitted in writing. To accomplish this:

1) If you already have long blonde curly hair, then a thing of beauty is a joy forever.

2) If you have long curly hair, but it is not blonde, you can dye it blonde. You can find hair dye online or at any drugstore. No, no. Don’t speak. For some moments in life there are no words.

3) If you have long blonde hair, but it is not curly, you will have to curl your hair with very thin curlers which are usually used for perms. You can find these online or at a drugstore. This will not be permanent, and you can use ones that heat for a quicker result or ones that do not heat but will stay in longer.

Do this the night before your cosplay, separate your hair in 3 sections as if to braid your hair and secure with elastics. Then separate each of those sections into three horizontal sections and secure with elastic.

Put all nine sections into the thin curlers and put a silk scarf over them, tied securely, so that none of the curlers will fall out during the night. Sleep on the curlers and tomorrow you can simply brush your hair and take gel on the tips of your fingers and push your fingers through your hair as if you are frustrated.

This will lay the poof down enough to accommodate your top hat. Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple. That’s 105%!

4) If you would rather not go through the trouble, a wig can be procured online or at a costume shop. If your hair ends up looking a big messy, all the better.

Is it my soul that calls upon my name? Delighted to meet you, sir. Overjoyed, enraptured, entranced. Are we ready? Yes, good. In we go.

Hat and Tie:

Wonka wears a top hat. He is seen in a milk chocolate colored top hat and a black top hat. Use your imagination! Either way you can find these online or in a costume shop. Now, don’t get excited. Don’t lose your head. We don’t want anybody to lose that.

His tie is gold and shiny in a material like silk or polyester, and it is so oversized that the bow droops on both sides. You can also find these online or in a costume shop. So shines a good deed in a weary world.

Jacket:

One of Wonka’s signatures is his bright purple velvet blazer jacket. This is very specific to him, and so you will have to find it online or at a costume shop. There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you’ll be free if you truly wish to be.

Vest, Shirt, and Pants:

Another of Wonka’s signatures is his black vest which is covered with bright purple flowers. This should be made of breathable polyester, as you will be wearing several layers.

In springtime, the only pretty ring time, birds sing hey ding… a-ding, a-ding, sweet lovers love… the spring. His shirt and pants are pretty easy to come by. Any white collared button-down shirt will do, which you can get online, or in a thrift store. Maybe they’ll be a little wiser for the wear.

The khaki chinos that he favors are also very easy to find. You can get them online, at any major retailer, or at a thrift store.

Cane and Shoes:

To complete the look, Wonka always carries a redwood cane with a white goose handle. You might want the cane to be made of plastic instead for lightness and ease of carrying throughout the day.

Time is a precious thing. Never waste it. The shoes he wears match the cane’s redwood color. They are dull red/ burgundy leather dress shoes. You can find a pleather pair that looks like them online or at a costume shop. But, if the good Lord intended us to walk, he wouldn’t have invented roller- skates.

Now, don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted. He lived happily ever after. All I ask is a tall ship and a star to sail her by. ‘Round the world and home again, that’s the sailor’s way. Nil desperandum, my dear. Across the desert lies the promised land. Goodbye. Adieu. Aufwiedersehen. Gesundheit. Farewell.
