Inigo Montoya DIY Costume Guide
Learn how to dress like Inigo Montoya for cosplay and Halloween

“Hello..My name is Inigo killed my father…prepare to die…”. These are the words that Inigo Montoya practiced ever since he was a little kid after witnessing the murder of his innocent father by a greedy, ruthless 6-fingered man…and ever since then he has been on the lookout for him, waiting to avenge his father by a sword fight to the death.

This classic Princess Bride character has forever ingrained these words into our minds and his swashbuckling attire and scarred face hold a dear place in many of our hearts.

Inigo looks like a suave adventurer, ready to brandish his fencing sword and challenge you to a duel. Kind of part 80’s and part fairytale, he wears his dark hair-sprayed hair long to his chin and has a small mustache above his lip. His clothes are all brown earth tones and, of course, always at the ready, is his long fencing sword.

How to Dress Like Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride

Inigo has black hair that looks kind of frizzy and like he applied a lot of hairspray. You want it to be chin-length. You can buy a black wig at a costume store or online and cut it to the right length if it’s too long. Also look for a fake black or dark brown mustache, sometimes you can find these in a vending machine. The man who killed his father also took a sword to his face and gave him a scar on both cheeks, which you could replicate with some makeup.

Inigo is kind of dressed like he’s from the renaissance, so think renaissance or earth-toned fairytale. He wears a dark brown vest overtop a lighter brown long-sleeved shirt that is open in a v-neck with loosely-drawn laces revealing his chest hair. (If you don’t have chest hair, you can draw it on with eyeliner.)

You can look for these items online or check out a thrift store; you can always cut the shirt to have a v-neck and cut small holes to lace string through to give it that effect. The long sleeve shirt is then tucked in, but the vest is left out and a leather belt is worn over it and around the hips, holding his sword.

There are also full Inigo Montoya costumes available for purchase online if you are looking for something more quick and easy, but a bit pricey.

Inigo wears brown leather pants, but any darker brown pants you may already have could work.

The boots that Inigo wears are tall and leather. You could buy some online or look around for tall brown ones at a thrift store.

Inigo’s sword is a fencing sword, so it has a skinny, long blade. If you can’t find something like this another, thicker more general fake sword could work. A real sword would probably not be the best idea.
