How to Dress Like Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland
Hat and Hairstyle
In the most recent live-action film adaptation, the Mad Hatter has long, unruly red hair topped off with a high hat. Since this style of hat isn’t popular nowadays, you may have to order this hat online.
You may be able to find it at a costume store as well. The Mad Hatter’s hat is partially covered in pinkish-purple fabric (or ribbon).
Face and Makeup
No Mad Hatter cosplay is complete without the iconic makeup look. The look uses pale foundation, heavy red blush, green eyeshadow and white mascara to create a truly mad, almost clown-like appearance.
Finish the makeup off with a vibrant dark pink lipstick. You should be able to purchase this makeup at your local drugstore.
Jacket
If you have an old suit jacket lying around, you can paint it to make the perfect Mad Hatter jacket. The Mad Hatter’s jacket is depicted differently in different works (sometimes it’s burgundy, sometimes navy, and occasionally green). Pick your favorite of these colors and get to work!
If you don’t have an old suit jacket, you can likely pick one up at your local thrift store.
Pants
The stylish Mad Hatter wears pin-stripe pants that match his jacket perfectly. You can make a pair of these pants with virtually any old pair you have around the house. Place tape where you don’t want paint (in a stripe-like pattern) and then paint the pants the same color you painted the jacket. Peel off the tape, and you’re good to go!
Scarf
The Mad Hatter sports a colorful scarf. It has a yellow, orange, and pink pattern on a black background. You can create a similar effect with a floral, brightly colored scarf and some black fabric paint. Easy to make, and identical to the Mad Hatter’s scarf!
Shoes
The Mad Hatter is usually wearing a stylish pair of brown dress shoes that have a bit of wear and tear. If you and your male relatives don’t have a pair of shoes like this, you’ll likely be able to pick them up at the thrift store (when you’re grabbing your jacket!).
Additional Accessories
If you’re looking to go the extra mile, you might want to score a spool belt. Attach multiple spools or multicolored thread to a black or brown belt and drape it over your body. The Mad Hatter also has a small, gold pocket watch.
By using all of these tips, you’ll be able to put the perfect Mad Hatter cosplay together. Grab some friends and recreate all of the characters. Just don’t forget to bring some tea!
