Max “Mad Max” Rockatansky is the main character of the Mad Max film series portrayed by Mel Gibson and later Tom Hardy. An MFP pursuit officer and road warrior, Max lives in the decaying world of an apocalyptic Australia, the only man standing between order and chaos on the open road, driving away marauders, terrorists and other ruffians who want to harass the surviving nation.

If you are looking for a rugged, apocalyptic chic look for your next cosplay convention or Halloween party, you can’t go wrong with a Mad Max costume!

How to Dress Like Max Rockatansky

Max has a full head of sandy brown hair down to the back of his neck, as well as stubble on his lower face.

For a more genuine look, purchase a bottle of hair oil and spray it a couple of times into your hair to get the same sweaty desert outback look as Max (be careful not to spray too much, it can look a bit greasy!) For the stubble, you can draw it on with a sandy brown eyebrow pencil.

Working in the post-apocalyptic wasteland means subjecting yourself to the hot sun all day, and Max’s face is often a bit sweaty and tanned. You can use a makeup highlighter and bronzing powder to get this look.

Mad Max has worn numerous outfits in the films and video game tie-in. In his most recent appearances such as in Fury Road, Max wears a baggy brown shirt and pants, a scruffy brown leather jacket, heavy shoulder pads and one dark brown fingerless glove (in most scenes he only wears the one glove, which is very tattered and made from a leather type material).

You can purchase these clothing supplies online from retail websites or locally from shopping malls and thrift stores. Look for distressed or vintage clothing for a more rugged outback style.

To finish off this costume, you’ll need some leg holsters like the ones Max wears to hold weapons, some tall leather work boots and finally Max’s mouth cage.

His mouth cage is actually a chrome and steel mask he wears throughout the film.

For the leg holsters and mouth cage, search Halloween stores and online costume websites, or break out your craft skills and use materials such as foam, tinfoil, chrome spray paint and plastic to make your own face mask.

Get your friends and family to dress up as other Mad Max characters, and practice some of Max’s best quotes and action scenes from the film series so you can act out all his moves!
