How to Dress like Run-DMC
Hats:
Known for their wild assortment of funky hats, including baseball caps, fedoras and porkpie hats, Run DMC often wore these retro headgear items during their music videos.
When buying a hat for your costume, make sure to get one in black, as this was usually the color that Run DMC opted for.
Glasses:
Whether wearing thick-framed hipster glasses or cool dark shades, the members of Run DMC often had a pair on. Glasses were an iconic part of their image.
Get a pair of fake glasses and sunglasses online from sites like Amazon. Search for thick retro frames for a more authentic eighties look.
ADIDAS Track Suit:
The most well-known attire worn by Run DMC was their black long-sleeved ADIDAS jumpsuit with stripes of white accent piping, along with matching jogging pants and a black t-shirt.
For an extra detail, look for a black t-shirt with the Run DMC logo printed onto the front, or purchase an iron-on decal to attach to a plain shirt.
Accessories:
Run DMC’s members were known for wearing thick gold chain necklaces.
If you do not have the funds to get a real gold chain for this get-up, a Halloween chain prop will do the trick just fine.
For footwear, purchase a pair of white ADIDAS running shoes with black accents, similar to the shoes that Run DMC was known for.
Boombox:
If you’re an classic hip-hop fan, you’ll know that the best way to listen to beats was on a big boombox with your friends outside!
You can get a retro-style boombox on Amazon that even has bluetooth capabilities so you can jam out to real Run-DMC tunes at your costume party. Or you can always try to find a real classic boombox at your local thrift store.
For some extra additions to make your costume more lifelike, purchase a cassette or CD of Run DMC music to play on your boombox as you carry it around, and buy a Run DMC logo sticker to attach to it, too. You can find music CDs, cassettes and other music album formats online from retail websites and music shops. For the Run DMC sticker, search retail websites and decal stores for one.
