How to Dress Like Joy from ‘Inside Out’

Hair:

Joy has dark blue hair in a stylish pixie cut with a small noticeable point formed at the top. To get the look of Joy’s hair for yourself, you can either dye your own hair blue using temporary coloring, or you can wear a blue wig.

Check online costume websites or Halloween stores for the right one, and use hairspray to hold it in place.

You can also use scissors to style your wig in the right shape, or browse online for a specific Joy costume wig. Give the wig a light dusting of glitter powder to get the same shining look that Joy’s hair has in the film!

Makeup:

Joy has glowing skin, bright blue eyeliner and peach-colored lipstick rimming her smile. You can use clear makeup powder, body glitter or highlighter to give your skin the same look, and you can use any pink tube of lipstick in whichever shade you prefer.

Select any blue eyeliner you like, either pencil or liquid, but if you plan to be outdoors, look for a waterproof brand. Check out online retail websites, drugstores or cosmetics shops to find the right supplies.

To really give your Joy costume just the right spark, you’ll need her lime green sundress. Speckled with a light blue flower pattern like a piece of 1970’s wallpaper, Joy’s dress is just as lively as her own personality is!
You can buy a Joy costume dress pre-made from online costume websites and Halloween stores, or you can sew your own from scratch using lime green fabric of your choice.

Joy wears yellow flats and no tights, but you can wear a pair of transparent nylon pantyhose if your convention or party takes place outside of the summer season. You can purchase a pair of pantyhose from any clothing store or retail website.

For the yellow flats, use any pair of thin yellow shoes or a pair of yellow ankle socks if you prefer.

Extra Accessory:

In the film, Joy collects and stores glowing colored balls containing Riley’s memories. If you want to add an extra touch of authenticity to your Joy costume, you can buy a yellow transparent plastic rubber bouncy ball and carry it with you as you hit the scene at your upcoming costume event. You can purchase rubber balls or inflatable beach balls online from most retail websites or party stores, which is especially useful if you’re planning on going to a summer beach costume party or convention!
