How to Dress Like Lord Eddard Stark from Game of Thrones
Hair and Beard:
Ned has long brown hair with a bit of a curl and a close- shaven beard. Ned often wears his hair in a “half- up” ponytail style to keep his locks out of his face on a windy evening. If you already possess these qualities, style your hair and beard as described and go forth! Winter is coming.
If you have long hair and a beard, dye them brown and style them as described. If you do not already have long hair you can easily find a wig in a costume shop or online and style it to match. If you cannot grow a beard you can buy a brown fake beard which you can fashion onto your face with spirit gum. Some secrets are safer kept hidden.
Brown Leather Outfit:
On my honor, Ned’s look is very easy to put together from pieces from other costumes from the Medieval or Renaissance Eras. You will need a black long- sleeve shirt, a brown lace up vest, brown Renaissance Pants, Brown leather or fake leather gloves, and brown boots.
You wear your honor like a suit of armor. You think it keeps you safe, but all it does is weigh you down and make it hard for you to move. That is to say, the clothing pieces should all look kind of like leather, but you want them to actually be made of cloth as leather and pleather are expensive, extremely warm, and difficult to walk in.
You can find these at any costume shop, the Renaissance fair, or online.
Black Cloak with Fur Collar and Pin:
Ned wears a black wool cloak with grey wolf’s fur on the collar to keep him warm in the snows of Winterfell. Of course, you can either buy a black cloak made of thinner material with a fake fur collar online or in a costume shop, or you can fashion your own by hot- gluing a rectangle of fake fur (found at any fabric store) to the top of a thin black cloak or a black sheet cut to go around your shoulders and skim the tops of your boots.
Pin the cloak at the neck with the gold Hand of the King pin, or with the silver Direwolf pin, the sigil of House Stark, both of which you can buy online or at a costume shop. When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.
Ice and Swordbelt:
Ned Stark wields a Valyrian steel greatsword called Ice, House Stark’s ancestral sword. The steel of Ancient Valyria is incredibly strong and sharp. The technology to make Valyrian steel has since been lost in the fall of the Targarian empire, and so these weapons are treasured and passed on from generation to generation in the great old houses of Westeros.
Ned believes that if you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die. He carried Ice in a sturdy leather swordbelt on his hip.
You can replicate this by buying a fake greatsword with a halbeard hilt and red handle. Or, you can buy a fake greatsword with a halbeard hilt and wrap the handle in red ribbon with hot glue to seal. You can buy a leather or fake leather swordbelt, preferably one long enough to tie in a knot at your waist, online, at the Renaissance Fair, or at a costume shop.
Now go forth and know the men who follow you and let them know you. Don’t ask your men to die for a stranger.
