How to Dress Like Fred Rogers from Mister Rogers Neighborhood
Hair:
Mr. Rogers has the look of an affable grandfather figure with light silver-gray hair. You can use a close-cropped wig to get a similar look yourself, which you can buy from most costume websites and Halloween stores. Or use silver frosted hairspray and give your own hair that same wizened look. He also has bushy eyebrows, which you can recreate yourself with an eyebrow pencil or Halloween makeup pencil.
Cardigan Sweater & Outfit
Mr. Rogers has worn a variety of outfits in his time on-screen, but is best known for his iconic bright red cardigan sweater, light blue dress shirt, spotted black necktie and blue 1970’s style slacks. You can purchase these vintage-looking items online from retail websites or from your local shopping mall or thrift store.
If you’re not a fan of red, don’t worry – Mr. Rogers had no shortage of other cardigan sweaters on-screen, including a bright honey-yellow one, a dark emerald green one and a navy blue one. You can choose whichever outfit of his you love the best!
Accessories:
Mr. Rogers usually wears simple shoes on his feet such as brown and black loafers, which you can find at most shoe shops and retail websites. To add some more creativity to your costume, bring with you some of the many toys and games he’s displayed over the years, including a red plastic fire chief hat, toy traffic light, stuffed cat puppet and construction worker’s hard hat.
Song:
If you grew up watching Mister Roger’s Neighborhood as a kid, you’ll no doubt remember the adorable theme song which played over the credits in the intro, sung by Fred Rogers himself. See if you can memorize the lyrics and practice singing them so you can have an extra dash of authenticity at your next convention or party!
